The Fortified Cities Tour

The fortified cities of Morocco are a reflection of Moroccan history. They represent attempts by different Moroccan dynasties at defending the land from invaders, and by foreign powers at consolidating their hold on prized Moroccan locations and to serve as trading posts. On this tour we will take you on a journey of discovery of these fortified cities and monuments of a glorious Moroccan history.

Day 1 - Casablanca
  Arrival at Casablanca's Mohammed V Airport. Welcome and transfer to the hotel. Sightseeing tour of the city made famous by Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman. Visit to the magnificent Hassan II Mosque with the tallest minaret in the world and exquisite moorish architecture. Dinner and overnight hotel accommodations.
 
Day 2 - Casablanca / El Jadida / Safi
 

After breakfast, departure for El Jadida, an important port of the XVI century. A quick rest stop in Azemmour. El Jadida is known for its cool summer days and its old portuguese fortress site of many battles until 1769 when it finally returned to Moroccan control. We will sightsee the medina and citadel and walk around the ramparts. We will also visit the recently discovered huge underground water reservoir with its gothic architecture; a setting used by the Hollywood film maker Orson Welles for his "Othello". Lunch and continuation to Safi. Dinner and overnight hotel accommodations.

 
Day 3 - Safi / Essaouira
 

Breakfast. Sightseeing tour of the city of Safi with its portuguese remnants. We will enjoy a panoramic view of the town and its port. We will see the ramparts with their massive towers and the portuguese sea castle. We will also visit the ancient Kasbah. At the top of "potters' hill", hundreds of artists mould beautiful items from clay . This pottery is the pride of Safi and is well appreciated in Morocco and overseas. We will see the old Medersa, or school, the Great Mosque, and the Catholic church, the only gothic church in North Africa. Continuation to Essaouira. Dinner and overnight hotel accommodations.

 
Day 4 - Essaouira / Marrakesh
  After breakfast, sightseeing of the city of Essaouira, one of the most attractive cities on the Atlantic coast of Morocco. It has a nice climate year round, is quiet and charming. Visit to the ramparts and to the fishing harbor for a delicious local seafood lunch. Visit to the artisans quarter where silversmiths and goldsmiths produce some of the finest jewelry in Morocco. Drive to Marrakesh. Dinner and overnight hotel accommodations.
 
Day 5 - Marrakesh
  After Breakfast, we will embark on a whole day sightseeing tour of the 'Pearl of the South': Tour the city ramparts, visit the Menara Gardens, the Koutoubia Minaret and Mosque, the tombs of the Saadian dynasty, the Bahia palace. Lunch at the hotel. In the afternoon we will continue the sightseeing of this fabulous and legendary Moroccan city. Visit to the famous Jemaa El Fna Square and to the nearby souks. Dinner with folk show at Chez Ali. Overnight at the hotel.
 
Day 6 - Marrakesh / Ouarzazate / Marrakesh
  Early morning breakfast and excursion to Ouarzazate via the Tizi Tichka pass in the Atlas mountains. Lunch in the city. We will then visit the magnificent kasbah in Taourirt, former residence of the Glaoui, and the famous Kasbah of Ait Benhaddou, a fabulous sand castle and Berber village. Return to Marrakesh, Dinner and hotel accommodations.
 
Day 7 - Marrakesh
  Whole day of relaxation or shopping at your leisure.
 
Day 8 - Marrakesh Menara Airport
 

Transfer to the airport. Assistance with departure formalities.
